The tribal tattoo was undoubtedly one of the most popular types of tattoo done in the 1990s. While many different peoples and cultures in history, many of them tribes, have practiced tattoo, the word “tribal” applies to them only loosely for this style. The modern “tribal” tattoo style is not taken from any one specific area or group of people and yet it is reminiscent of many due to its bold and solid black patterns, much like those of Polynesia and the Pacific. Rather than easily recognized symbols or figures, tribal tattoo art relies upon sweeping solid curves with sharp points, as well as the un-tattooed spaces left in between the black curves, to form intricate patterns. However, the tribal style can be applied to any type of image and can and has been used to portray everything from ROSES to JESUS.
